Microstructure Refinement of EB-PVD Gadolinium Zirconate Thermal Barrier Coatings to Improve Their CMAS Resistance

چکیده
Rare-earth zirconates are proven to be very effective in restricting the CMAS attack against thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by forming quick crystalline reaction products that seal porosity infiltration. The microstructural effects on efficacy of Electron Beam-Physical Vapor Deposition gadolinium zirconate (EB-PVD GZO) explored this study. Four distinct GZO microstructures were manufactured and response two selected variants different volcanic ash melts was studied for annealing times between 10 min 50 h at 1250 °C. A significant variation characteristics achieved altering substrate temperature rotation speed. refined microstructure with smaller intercolumnar gaps long feather arms lowered infiltration 56%–72%. Garnet phase, which formed as a continuous layer top apatite fluorite, is identified beneficial product improves resistance.

The substrate material was nickel-based superalloy (In738LC), and CoNiCrAlY was pressureless plasma-sprayed on the substrate as the bond coating. As the top coating, zirconia with 4 mol% yttria was electron beam-physical vapor deposited (EB-PVD) on the rotating substrate. The rotation speeds in the EB-PVD process were 5, 10 and 20rpm. The specimens were exposed to 1273K in air atmosphere for 20...
متن کاملErosion, Corrosion and Erosion-Corrosion of EB PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings
Electron beam (EB) physical vapour deposited (PVD) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been used in gas turbine engines for a number of years. The primary mode of failure is attributed to oxidation of the bondcoat and growth of the thermally grown oxide (TGO), the alumina scale that forms on the bondcoat and to which the ceramic top coat adheres. Once the TGO reaches a critical thickness the T...
متن کاملMicrostructure of as-coated thermal barrier coatings with varying lifetimes
The microstructures of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) in as-coated electron beam physical vapor deposited (EB-PVD) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were examined by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) as a function of demonstrated TBC lifetime in a thermally cycled environment. As-coated TBC specimens were selected for analysis based on individual statistical significance in overal...
